President Introduction & Request for Volunteers

This is a long overdue introduction, but my name is Chris Slack and I took over the CBAA basketball organization in March 2019. My wife Mary and our three kids, Maya, Jasmine and Quinn have resided in Furlong PA since we moved to the area in 2013. I have been involved with CBAA basketball for the past 6 years and have held numerous positions in the organization. Since my appointment as President, I have been working on several initiatives to help improve and strengthen our organization.

Our first objective was to resurface the outdoor basketball courts at the Herbst Sports Complex. These courts were in dire need of repair, as multiple cracks had formed across the three courts. In the Basketball Board's opinion, it was a safety hazard for our 1,400 players that participate in the CBAA summer league. The cost of the repair was $25,000 and we have now made these courts playable for the next 8 to 10 years. Another initiative at the courts, planned for 2020 is to replace the fencing along with removing and re-pouring all of the concrete footers. This repair will cost our organization another $15,000.

The second objective was to institute our Basketball Academy to be open to anyone who participates in CBAA basketball. This summer we ran two successful programs with Coach Derek Wright, who ran our Skills Session 1, which had 65 participants and Coach Jay Joseph who ran Skills Session 2, which had 45 participants. Unfortunately, we did not do a good job of advertising Skills Session 3 at Archbishop Wood and had to cancel this session. Going forward, we will be offering a free skills and drills clinic with CB East as well as drop In sessions with the Delaware Valley University Division III Men's team. We are also working with Archbishop Wood to offer another skills clinic.

Our third and most important objective is to rebuild our volunteer base. Over the last few years, several of our key board volunteers have had kids age out of our program, which means parents have moved out of critical volunteer positions. Unfortunately, we have not had success in replacing these positions with parents from the younger age groups. As I am sure everyone realizes, our organization is only as good as the community who supports it.

As of today, we have several positions that we need help from our membership in filling. The most critical positions are related to our League Directors. Boys and Girls 5th – 6th grade is currently open. League Directors either form teams (Grades 3rd-4th ) or hold a draft (Grades 5th and up) in order to form rosters. Directors are also responsible for assigning a coach to a fixed practice date and time as well as drafting a schedule for the league. Most of the setup is completed in November, with light maintenance once the league starts games in December. Registration fees are waived for league directors.

Lastly, we have positions open in Social Media, Website Content Management, and Community Sponsorships. Please email; with your interest.

Looking forward to a great year!
